The Question Matters

The Brand Called You

I discovered a book called Live First, Work Second, by Rebecca Ryan, which describes the kind of worker who will thrive in the 21st Century, especially those workers represented by the Millennial Generation and, I would argue, many of the more thoughtful members of Generation X.  In chapter 3, Rebecca describes the kind of workplace the next generation employee desires.  One non-negotiable competency of the next generation workplace will be the need to make “career coaching a fixture in all conversations between managers and employees.”

The reality is, Generation X and the Millennials are displaying very little loyalty to a company.  We would rather fulfill all that we were made to be rather than serve someone else’s cause.  Therefore, we need personal branding as a way of standing out, describing what makes us unique and special in an ever-changing Knowledge Economy.

You know a brand when you see it–Coca-Cola, the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Yankees, McDonalds–all of these organizations have unmistakable brands.  So, what would your personal brand look like?

Good business branding. Now take the next step and brand yourself. What are you most proud of about yourself?

Great thought for today. I want to read that book when you’re done. i hope that you’ll also post some ideas for how someone can personally brand themselves.

I’d like to say that my personal brand is one that helps people achieve REAL results for their weight, energy and financial health by partnering with a top notch company and with excellent customer service in a timely manner.
