The Question Matters

Tear Down This Wall

Posted in Family,Leadership by treyfinley1008 on November 9, 2009

Former President Reagan’s words still echo today:  “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

Berlin WallWhat was once a symbol of totalitarianism, of defiance, and of fear, is now only a memory.  Twenty years ago today, the Berlin Wall fell.  It is a defining moment for Generation X, a symbol of crumbling institutions, and a metaphor for broken community.  A year after Ronald Reagan’s second term in office ended, George H. W. Bush watched as a symbol of Communism fell to the ground, hastened by an East German official’s announcement that travel to the West would begin “without delay.”

The picture above is a piece of history.  My wife received this gift from a family friend who was living in Germany the year the wall fell.  It is a reminder to me that all entities that separate rather than unite must fall, and will.

Interesting post. I have just posted on the fall of the wall from the standpoint of European integration.
